John Wilder Tukey was born in New Bedford, Massachusetts, USA. He was an American mathematician best known for development of the FFT algorithm and box plot. He earned a Bachelor's Degree in chemistry in 1936 and a Master's Degree in chemistry in 1937 both from Brown University. He received his PhD in mathematics from Princeton University in 1939. He was a full professor and founding chairman of the Princeton statistics department in 1965. He was awarded the National Medal of Science by President Nixon in 1973. He was awarded the IEEE Medal of Honor in 1982 "For his contributions to the spectral analysis of random processes and the fast Fourier transform algorithm." He wrote several books include: Convergence and uniformity in topology, The measurement of power spectra (with Ralph Beebe Blackman), Index to statistics and probability, Exploratory Data Analysis, and Graphical Analysis of Multi-Response Data (with Kaye Basford).
