George Robert Acworth Conquest was born in Great Malvern, Worcestershire, England. He was a British-American historian and poet, notable for his influential works on Soviet history including The Great Terror: Stalin's Purges of the 1930s. He wrote more than a dozen books on the Soviet Union and he was a traditional conservative. He was educated at Winchester College, University of Grenoble, and Magdalen College, Oxford. He earned his bachelor's and master's degrees in Philosophy, Politics and Economics, and his doctorate in Soviet history. He was a longtime research fellow at Stanford University's Hoover Institution. He wrote several poetry books include: Between Mars and Venus, Arias from a Love Opera, Forays, Penultimata, A Garden of Erses, and Blokelore and Blokesongs. In 2005, he was awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom by President George W. Bush.
