Jan de Hartog was born in Haarlem, Netherlands. He was a Dutch playwright and novelist who moved to theĀ United StatesĀ in the early 1960s and became a Quaker. He wrote several novels include: Hollands glorie, Stella, A Sailor's Life, The Spiral Road, The Inspector, The Sailing Ship, The Captain, The Peaceable Kingdom(Nominated for Nobel Prize in 1972), The lamb's war, The Trail of the Serpent, Star of Peace, The Centurion, and The Outer Buoy. He wrote several plays include: Death of a Rat, The Fourposter(won- Tony award for best new play), and William and Mary.
