George Phillips Bond was born in Dorchester, Boston, Massachusetts, USA. He was an American astronomer. He was the son of William Cranch Bond. He earned a B.A. degree in 1845 and an M.S. degree in 1853 from Harvard University. He succeeded his father as director of Harvard College Observatory. He took the first photograph of a star in 1850 and of a double star in 1857; suggested photography could be used to measure a star's magnitude; and discovered numerous comets and calculated their orbits. He also studied Saturn and the Orion Nebula. He and his father jointly discovered Saturn's moon, Hyperion. He was Assistant Director of Harvard College Observatory from 1845-59 and director of Harvard College Observatory from 1859-65. He wrote two books include: Account of the Great Comet of 1858 and Observations upon the Great Nebula of Orion. He Won the Gold Medal of the Royal Astronomical Society in 1865.
