John Ricardo I. "Juan" Cole was born in Albuquerque, New Mexico, USA. He is an American historian, blogger and commentator on the modern Middle East and South Asia. He is Richard P. Mitchell Collegiate Professor of History at the University of Michigan. Since 2002, he has written a weblog, Informed Comment which is also syndicated on Truthdig.com. He earned a BA degree in History and Literature of Religions from Northwestern University in 1975. He earned an MA degree in Arabic Studies from American University in Cairo in 1978. He received his PhD in Islamic Studies from the University of California, Los Angeles in 1984. He was appointed Assistant Professor of History at the University of Michigan where he became a full professor in 1995. He has written several books include: Roots of North Indian Shi'ism in Iran and Iraq, Modernity and the Millennium, Colonialism and Revolution in the Middle East, Sacred Space and Holy War, Napoleon's Egypt, Engaging the Muslim World, and The New Arabs.
