John Marshall Harlan was born in Boyle County, Kentucky, USA. He was an American judge and politician. He served as an associate justice of the Supreme Court of the United States from 1877-1911. He studied at Centre College, Danville, Kentucky, and Transylvania University, Lexington, Kentucky. He was admitted to the Kentucky Bar in 1853. He entered Kentucky politics in 1851, and served a variety of positions, most notably Attorney General of Kentucky from 1863 to 1867. He is best known for his role as the lone dissenter in the Civil Rights Cases, and Plessy v. Ferguson, which, respectively, struck down as unconstitutional federal anti-discrimination legislation and upheld southern segregation statutes.
