Eduard Hanslick was born in Prague, Czech Republic. He was a Austrian music critic and writer. He studied philosophy and law in Prague, received his doctorate from the University of Vienna in 1849, and taught there from 1856, becoming a regular professor in 1870. An excellent pianist, Hanslick served as a juror at various exhibitions of musical instruments, and, for his accomplishments in advancing the prestige of Austrian instrument makers, he was honoured by the Austrian government. Hanslick’s best known book, Vom musikalisch-Schönen, has been published in many editions and translations.
