George Grosz was born in Berlin, Germany. He was a German artist known especially for his caricatural drawings and paintings of Berlin life in the 1920s. From 1909 to 1911, he studied at the Dresden Academy of Fine Arts. He subsequently studied at the Berlin College of Arts and Crafts under Emil Orlik. In his drawings, usually in pen and ink which he sometimes developed further with watercolor. His draftsmanship was excellent although the works for which he is best known adopt a deliberately crude form of caricature. Abandoning the style and subject matter of his earlier work, he exhibited regularly and taught for many years at the Art Students League of New York. His memoirs, The Autobiography of George Grosz was published in 1955.
