Sir John Tenniel was born in London, England. He was an English illustrator and political cartoonist. He is remembered especially as the principal political cartoonist for Punch magazine for over 50 years, and for his illustrations to Lewis Carroll's Alice's Adventures in Wonderland and Through the Looking-Glass, and What Alice Found There. He studied at Royal Academy of Arts, London. His first book illustration was for Samuel Carter Hall's The Book of British Ballads, in 1842. He was knighted for his artistic achievements in 1893.
