James Quinn Wilson was born in Denver, Colorado, USA. He was an American political scientist. He earned a BA degree from the University of Redlands in 1952. He earned an MA degree in 1957 and his PhD in political science from the University of Chicago in 1959. Most of his career was spent as a professor at the University of California, Los Angeles and Harvard University. He was Director of Joint Center for Urban Studies at Harvard-MIT. He was the former president of the American Political Science Association. He gained national attention for a 1982 article introducing the broken windows theory in The Atlantic. He wrote several books include: Varieties of police behavior, American Government(with John J. DiIulio, Jr. and Bose Meena), Thinking About Crime, Crime and Human Nature(with Richard Herrnstein), Bureaucracy, On character(essays), The Moral Sense, Political Organizations, Moral Judgment, and The Marriage Problem. In 2003, he was awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom by US President George W. Bush.
