George Rogers Clark was born in Charlottesville, Virginia, USA. He was an American surveyor, militia officer from Virginia, and the highest ranking American military officer on the northwestern frontier during the American Revolutionary War. Early in life he became a land-surveyor; he took part in Lord Dunmore's War, and in 1775 went as a surveyor for the Ohio Company to Kentucky, whither he removed early in 1776. He served as leader of the Kentucky militia throughout much of the war. He is best known for his celebrated captures of Kaskaskia and Vincennes during the Illinois Campaign, which greatly weakened British influence in the Northwest Territory.
