Sir John Harold Clapham was born in Salford, Greater Manchester, England. He was a British economic historian. He educated at King's College, Cambridge. He was a lecturer in History and Economics, and was Professor of Economics both at Leeds University. He was the first Professor of Economic History at Cambridge University from 1928-1938, and Vice-Provost of King's College, Cambridge from 1933-1943 when he received a knighthood. He wrote several books include: The Causes of the War of 1792, The Economic Development of France and Germany 1815-1914, An Economic History of Modern Britain, The Study of Economic History, and The Bank of England: A History.
