Joe Chung was born in Yuen Long, Yuen Long Plain, New Territories, Hong Kong. He is a Chinese writer who lives in Norway. He has published five books and numerous magazine articles. In particular, his "I Don't Want to Be Chinese", a book which criticises certain aspects of traditional Chinese culture, was a best-seller in Hong Kong and Taiwan, and though banned in mainland China. In 1991, he completed his master's degree in sociology at Chinese University of Hong Kong. In the elections of 1994 and 1999 for the District Councils of Hong Kong, he represented the Hong Kong Democratic Party in the geographical constituency of Wong Tai Sin but was not elected. He is a frequent contributor to Hong Kong Open magazine.
