Edmond Halley was born in Haggerston, Middlesex, England. He was an English astronomer, geophysicist, mathematician, meteorologist, and physicist who is best known for computing the orbit of the eponymous Halley's Comet. He was the second Astronomer Royal in Britain, succeeding John Flamsteed. He was awarded his M.A. degree at Oxford and elected as a Fellow of the Royal Society at the age of 22. In January 1704, Halley was elected Savilian Professor of Geometry at Oxford, and so returned to more scholarly pursuits; he was awarded an honorary Doctor of Civil Laws degree by the university in 1710.
