About
Sir James Whyte Black was born in Uddingston, Lanarkshire, Scotland. He was a Scottish pharmacologist. He was awarded the Nobel Prize for Medicine in 1988 for work leading to the development of propranolol and cimetidine. He established a Veterinary Physiology department at the University of Glasgow, where he became interested in the effects of adrenaline on the human heart. He graduated from the University of St Andrews School of Medicine with an MB ChB in 1946. He served as a professor of Pharmacology at the University College London from 1973-77 and King's College London from 1984-93. He served as Chancellor of the University of Dundee from 1992-2006.
