Imre Lakatos was born in Debrecen, Hungary. He was a Hungarian philosopher of mathematics and science, known for his thesis of the fallibility of mathematics and its 'methodology of proofs and refutations' in its pre-axiomatic stages of development. He earned a BS degree in mathematics, physics, and philosophy from the University of Debrecen in 1944. He also continued his education with a PhD at Debrecen University awarded in 1948. He also studied at the Moscow State University under the supervision of Sofya Yanovskaya in 1949. He earned his PhD in philosophy from Cambridge University in 1961. He served as a professor at London School of Economics from 1960-1974. He wrote several books include: Proofs and Refutations, The Methodology of Scientific Research Programmes, Mathematics, Science and Epistemology, and For and Against Method(with Paul Feyerabend).
