John LaFarge was born in New York City, USA. He was an American painter, stained glass window maker and writer. He studied at Mount St. Mary's University in Maryland and St. John's College in New York. He also studied with the painter William Morris Hunt in Newport, Rhode Island. His first mural was painted in Trinity Church, Boston, in 1873. Then followed his decorations in the Church of the Ascension and St. Paul's Chapel, New York. He served as President of the National Society of Mural Painters from 1899 to 1904. He experimented with color problems, especially in the medium of stained glass. His work rivaled the beauty of medieval windows and added new resources by his use of opalescent glass and by his original methods of layering and welding the glass. He wrote several books include: Considerations on Painting, Reminiscences of the South Seas, and The Gospel Story in Art.
