Joichi "Joi" Ito was born in Kyoto, Japan. He is a Japanese entrepreneur, venture capitalist and director of the MIT Media Lab. He studied at Tufts University and the University of Chicago. He is a professor of the practice of media arts and sciences at MIT and a visiting professor of law from practice at the Harvard Law School. He is the chairman of the board of PureTech Health. He is a strategic advisor to Sony Corporation, and a board member of The New York Times Company. He is the author of books, entitled Freesouls, and Whiplash: How to Survive Our Faster Future (with Jeff Howe).
