Ian MacDougall Hacking was born in Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada. He is a Canadian philosopher specializing in the philosophy of science. He earned a BA degree in Mathematics and Physics from the University of British Columbia in 1956. He earned a BA degree in Moral Science from Trinity College, Cambridge University in 1958. He earned his PhD from Cambridge University in 1962. He started his teaching career as an instructor at Princeton University in 1960. He served as a professor at Stanford University and the University of Toronto. From 2000 to 2006, he held the Chair of Philosophy and History of Scientific Concepts at the Collège de France. He was a Professor of Philosophy at the University of California, Santa Cruz, from 2008 to 2010. He has written several books include: The Logic of Statistical Inference, The Emergence of Probability, Why does language matter to philosophy?, Representing and intervening, The Taming of Chance, Rewriting the Soul, The social construction of what?, and Historical Ontology. He has won numerous awards, such as the Killam Prize for the Humanities and the Balzan Prize.
