John Hay Whitney was born in Ellsworth, Maine, USA. He was an American businessman, diplomat and publisher. He served as the United States Ambassador to the United Kingdom from 1957-1961, publisher of the New York Herald Tribune, and president of the Museum of Modern Art. He studied at Yale College and Oxford University. In 1946, he founded J.H. Whitney & Company. He was also the major investor in David O. Selznick's production company Selznick International Pictures. He served in the United States Army Air Forces as an intelligence officer during World War II.
