John Dennis was born in London, England. He was an English critic and playwright whose insistence upon the importance of passion in poetry led to a long quarrel with Alexander Pope. He earned a BA degree from Caius College, Cambridge in 1679. He earned an MA degree from Trinity Hall, Cambridge in 1683. The most important of Dennis’ critical works are The Usefulness of the Stage, The Advancement and Reformation of Modern Poetry, The Grounds of Criticism in Poetry, and An Essay on the Genius and Writings of Shakespear. He wrote several plays include: Rinaldo and Armida, Orpheus and Eurydice, and Appius and Virginia.
