James Philip Knight was born in Bexley, England. He is a British Labour and Co-operative Party politician who was the Member of Parliament for South Dorset from 2001-2010. He earned a BA Hons degree from Fitzwilliam College, Cambridge. He held several ministerial posts including Minister for the South West, Minister of State for Employment and Welfare Reform, and Minister of State for Schools and Learning. In 2008 following the reshuffle, he became a member of the Privy Council. He is now a managing director at TES Global Ltd, and a Visiting Professor at the London Knowledge Lab of the Institute of Education in London.
