George Jean Nathan was born in Fort Wayne, Indiana, USA. He was an American drama critic and editor. He graduated from Cornell University in 1904 and joined the staff of the New York Herald. He worked closely with H.L. Mencken, bringing the literary magazine The Smart Set to prominence as an editor, and co-founding and editing The American Mercury and The American Spectator. As a critic he championed the plays of Henrik Ibsen, August Strindberg, George Bernard Shaw, Eugene O’Neill, Sean O’Casey, and William Saroyan. He wrote several books include: A Book Without a Title, The critic and the drama, The Popular Theatre, Passing judgments, The Testament of a Critic, The autobiography of an attitude, and Beware of parents.
