James Phillip Welch, Jr. was born in Browning, Montana, USA. He was an American novelist and poet. He wrote several novels include: Winter in the Blood, The Death of Jim Loney, Fools Crow(American Book Awards), The Indian Lawyer, and The Heartsong of Charging Elk. He wrote several poems include: Riding the Earthboy 40, Snow Country Weavers, and Dreaming Winter. He graduated in 1965 with a B.A. in liberal arts. In 1997, he received a Lifetime Achievement Award from the Native Writers' Circle of the Americas.
