James Arthur Gibbons was born in Sparks, Nevada, USA. He is an American Republican politician, lawyer, pilot, soldier and geologist. He served as the 28th Governor of Nevada from 2007 to 2011. He served as member of the United States House of Representatives from Nevada's 2nd district from 1997-2006. He earned a BS degree in Geology in 1967 and an MS degree in Mining Geology in 1973 both the University of Nevada at Reno. He earned his law degree from Southwestern Law School, Los Angeles, California in 1979. He also studied at the University of Southern California, Air Command and Staff College, and Air War College. During his military career, he earned nineteen service medals, including the Legion of Merit and Distinguished Flying Cross. In civilian life, he has worked as a lawyer in private practice, and an airline pilot for both Western Airlines and Delta Air Lines.
