John Gibbon was born in Holmesburg, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, USA. He was an American Army officer who fought in the American Civil War and the Indian Wars. He graduated from the United States Military Academy in 1847. He served as president of the Iron Brigade Association, and Commander in Chief of the Military Order of the Loyal Legion of the United States from October 1895 until his death the following year. He wrote several books include: The Artillerist's Manual, Personal Recollections of the Civil War, and Adventures on the Western Frontier.
