Harold Lee Washington was born in Chicago, Illinois, USA. He was an American lawyer and politician. He was a member of the Illinois House of Representatives from 1965 to 1976 and the Illinois State Senate from 1977 to 1980. He was also a member of the U.S. House of Representatives from 1981 to 1983 representing the Illinois first district. He elected as the 51st Mayor of Chicago. He was the first African-American to serve as Mayor of Chicago, in office from April 29, 1983 until his death on November 25, 1987. He earned a BA degree from Roosevelt College in 1949. He received his J.D. from Northwestern University Law School in 1952.
