Joel Henry Hildebrand was born in Camden, New Jersey, USA. He was an American chemist and educator. He was a major figure in physical chemistry research specializing in liquids and nonelectrolyte solutions. He graduated from the University of Pennsylvania in 1903. He served as a professor at the University of California, Berkeley. He served as the Dean of the College of Chemistry from 1949 through 1951. He received many awards, including Willard Gibbs Award in 1953 and Priestley Medal in 1962. He wrote several books include: Principles of Chemistry, Solubility of non-electrolytes, Science in the Making, Regular and Related Solutions (with J.M. Prausnitz and R.L. Scott), and Viscosity and Diffusivity.
