He studied at Trinity Evangelical Divinity School and Michigan State University. He is best known as the founder and editor of Sojourners magazine. He is well known for his advocacy on issues of peace and social justice. He is also a leader in the Red-Letter Christian movement. He has been arrested 22 times for acts of civil disobedience. He was involved in antiwar activism during the Vietnam War. He worked as a spiritual advisor to President Barack Obama. He has written several books include: Agenda for Biblical people, The call to conversion, The Soul of Politics, God's Politics, The Great Awakening, Rediscovering Values, On God's Side, and America's Original Sin. In 1995, he received the Pacem in Terris Peace and Freedom Award. He was awarded the Peace Abbey Courage of Conscience award in 2000. He is married to Joy Carroll who was one of the first female priests in the Church of England. They have two sons.
