Isabelle Eberhardt was born in Geneva, Switzerland. She was a Swiss-Algerian explorer and writer. She was educated in Switzerland by her father. She lived and travelled extensively in North Africa. Upon invitation Eberhardt relocated to Algeria in May 1897, where she dressed as a man and converted to Islam, eventually adopting the name Si Mahmoud Saadi. An eventful life followed, for her gift for writing was matched only by her taste for what one may call 'investigative journalism'. She married her long-time partner Slimane Ehnni, an Algerian soldier. In 1904 she was killed in a flash flood in Aïn Sefra at the age of 27. She wrote several books include: The Oblivion Seekers, Sandmeere, The Nomad, In the shadow of Islam, Writings from the Sand, Criminal, and Prisoner of dunes.
