John Dalton was born in Eaglesfield, Cumbria, England. He was an English chemist, physicist and meteorologist. He is best known for proposing the modern atomic theory and for his research into colour blindness, sometimes referred to as Daltonism in his honour. At the age of 27 he was appointed professor of mathematics and natural philosophy at the Manchester College, Oxford University. He took with him the proof sheets of his first book, a collection of essays on meteorologic topics based on his own observations together with those of his friends John Gough and Peter Crosthwaite. This work, Meteorological Observations and Essays, was published in 1793.
