Gerald White Johnson was born in Riverton, North Carolina, USA. He was an American journalist, editor, author, and historian. Over his nearly 75 year career he was known for being "one of the most eloquent spokespersons for America's adversary culture". He graduated from Wake Forest College in 1910. He was the first professor of journalism at the University of North Carolina. He worked for The Evening Sun of Baltimore from 1926 to 1943. In 1950, he published an article in Harper's called "Why Communists are Valuable." He wrote several books include: The Story of Man's Work(with William Richart Hayward), The Wasted Land, Roosevelt: Dictator Or Democrat?, American heroes and hero-worship, An honorable Titan, America is Born(won John Newbery Medal), The Cabinet, and The Imperial Republic.
