James Gadsden was born in Charleston, South Carolina, USA. He was an American diplomat, soldier and businessman. He served as Adjutant General of the U. S. Army from August 13, 1821- March 22, 1822. He was commonly known as General Gadsden, although he never held a rank above Colonel. He earned his bachelor's degree from Yale University in Connecticut in 1806. He served as a commissioned officer under the command of General Andrew Jackson, who was to be elected the President in 1828. He served as the president of the South Carolina Railroad company from 1840 to 1850. In 1853, he was appointed by the U.S. Government as the new American minister to Mexico.
