John Griffin Carlisle was born in Kenton County, Kentucky, USA. He was an American Democratic politician and lawyer. He served as the Speaker of the United States House of Representatives from 1883 to 1889 and afterward served as Secretary of the Treasury from 1893 to 1897, during the Panic of 1893. He began his public life as a lawyer in Covington, Kentucky, under John W. Stevenson. He served as the United States Senator from Kentucky (1890-1893). He was a member of the U.S. House of Representatives from Kentucky's 6th congressional district from 1877-1890. He served as the 20th Lieutenant Governor of Kentucky from 1871-1875. He was a member of the Kentucky House of Representatives and Kentucky State Senate.
