Jessye Mae Norman was born in Augusta, Georgia, USA. She is an American opera singer. In 1966, she won the National Society of Arts and Letters singing competition. After graduating in 1967 with a degree in music, she began graduate-level studies at the Peabody Conservatory in Baltimore and later at the University of Michigan School of Music, Theatre & Dance from which she earned a Master's degree in 1968. Her albums list shown below: Sacred Songs, Lieder (with Phillip Moll), Amazing Grace, Spirituals in Concert (with Kathleen Battle), Salzburg Recital (with James Levine), Lucky To Be Me, In the Spirit, An Evening with Jessye Norman, I Was Born in Love With You (with Michel Legrand), Beethoven: Fidelio, Bizet: Carmen, and Weber: Euryanthe. She has been inducted into the Georgia Music Hall of Fame and is a Spingarn Medalist. She has received the Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award, the National Medal of Arts, and is a member of the British Royal Academy of Music.
