Denis Kearney was born in Oakmount, County Cork, Ireland. He was a California labor leader of the late 19th century who was known for his nativist and racist views about Chinese immigrants. He is known for ending all of his speeches with the sentence "And whatever happens, the Chinese must go." He studied public speaking and frequented newspaper offices, where he exchanged views on current affairs and social philosophy. In 1877 he was elected secretary of the Workingmen's Trade and Labor Union of San Francisco.
