Chester William Nimitz was born in Fredericksburg, Texas. He was commander of the U.S. Pacific Fleet during World War II. A brilliant strategist, he commanded all land and sea forces in the central Pacific. Nimitz was the leading U.S. Navy authority on submarines. He was the United States' last surviving officer who served in the rank of fleet admiral.
