John George Nicolay was born in Essingen, Rhineland-Palatinate, Germany. He was a German-born American biographer. He served as private secretary to US President Abraham Lincoln and later co-authored a biography of the 16th President. Shortly before his assassination, Lincoln appointed Nicolay to a diplomatic post in France. After the death of the President, he became United States Consul at Paris, France. He was Marshal of the United States Supreme Court. He wrote several books include: Hole-in-the-day, The Outbreak of the Rebellion, An oral history of Abraham Lincoln (biography), and With Lincoln in the White House (biography).
