James Merrill "Jim" Jeffords was born in Rutland, Vermont, USA. He was an American politician and lawyer. He graduated from Yale University in 1956 and Harvard Law School in 1962. He served as a U.S. Senator from Vermont from 1989-2007. He served as a U.S. Representative from Vermont's at-large congressional district from 1975 to 1989. Sworn into the Senate in 1989, he served as a Republican until 2001, when he left the party to become an Independent and began caucusing with the Democrats. He served as an Attorney General of Vermont from 1969-1973. He was a member of the Vermont State Senate from 1967-1968. He wrote several books include: My declaration of independence, and An independent man.
