Estelle Margaret Parsons was born in Lynn, Massachusetts, USA. She is an American stage, film, and television actress, Today Show television presenter, and theatre director. She graduated from Connecticut College in 1949, and studied law at Boston University. She received an Academy Award for Best Supporting Actress for her role as Blanche Barrow in Bonnie and Clyde, and was also nominated for her work in Rachel, Rachel. She received a BAFTA Award nomination for her role in Watermelon Man. She has been nominated five times for the Tony Award. She worked extensively in film and theatre during the 1970s and later directed several Broadway productions. In 2004, she was inducted into the American Theatre Hall of Fame. Her role in other films include: Ladybug Ladybug, Don't Drink the Water, Two People, Fore Play, and Boys on the Side.
