James Naismith was born in Almonte, Ontario, Canada. He was a Canadian-American physical educator, physician, sports coach and inventor. He invented the game of basketball at age 30 in 1891. He wrote the original basketball rule book and founded the University of Kansas basketball program. He earned a BA degree in Physical Education from McGill University. He received his medical degree in Denver in 1898. He served as professor at Springfield College from 1891-95, and the University of Kansas from 1898-1937.
