John Eric Ensign was born in Roseville, California, USA. He is an American veterinarian and former Republican politician. He served as United States Senator from Nevada (2001-2011). He was a US Congressman from Nevada's 1st congressional district (1995-1999). He studied at the University of Nevada, Las Vegas. He earned a BS degree from Oregon State University, Corvalis in 1981. He earned his Doctor of Veterinary Medicine degree from Colorado State University, Fort Collins in 1985 and entered veterinary practice soon after. He owned two animal hospitals before entering politics. He married Darlene Sciarretta in 1987. They have two sons and one daughter.
