Dame Jennifer Mary Shipley was born in Gore, New Zealand. She is a New Zealander politician. She served as Prime Minister of New Zealand from 1997 to 1999. She was the first woman to hold the position, and is the only woman to have led the National Party. She studied at Marlborough Girls' College and the Christchurch College of Education. She taught in New Zealand primary schools until 1976. She was elected to Parliament at the 1987 election, winning the Ashburton electorate. She served as Minister of Social Welfare, Minister for Women's Affairs, Minister of Health, and Minister of Transport.
