George Harris was born in East Machias, Washington County, Maine, United States. He was an American theologian and educator. He graduated from Amherst College in 1866. He was the second Senior Minister at Central Congregational Church in Providence from 1872 to 1883. From 1883 to 1899, he was a professor of Christian theology at Andover Theological Seminary and from 1899 to 1911 president of Amherst College. He is the author of Moral Evolution and Inequality and Progress. He was one of the editors of the Andover Review from 1884–93.
