Being solitary is being alone well: being alone luxuriously immersed in doings of your own choice, aware of the fullness of your won presence rather than of the absence of others. Because solitude is an achievement.

Author Alice Koller has chosen to live a solitary life for the past 25 years, a life without other human beings in her household. She has chosen to live with and love three dogs, Logos, Ousia and Kairos. She has chosen not to be a part of any community. Koller made these choices after spending three months of solitude on Nantucket in 1962. Her inward journey there was documented in her book An Unknown Woman, which climbed the best-seller lists in the early 1980s.
