Hugo Lafayette Black was born in Ashland, Alabama, USA. He was an American politician and Jurist. He served as a Democratic United States Senator from Alabama in the Senate from 1927 to 1937. He served as an Associate Justice of the Supreme Court of the United States from 1937 to 1971. He was nominated to the Supreme Court by President Franklin D. Roosevelt. He studied at the University of Alabama School of Law. After graduating in June 1906, he moved back to Ashland and established a legal practice. His practice was not successful there, so Black moved to Birmingham in 1907 where he specialized in labor law and personal injury cases. He wrote several books include: A Constitutional Faith, The Bill of Rights, and Mr. Justice and Mrs. Black.
