Hamilton Wright Mabie was born in Cold Spring, New York, USA. He was an American essayist, editor, critic, and lecturer. He studied at Williams College and the Columbia Law school. In the summer of 1879 he was hired to work at the weekly magazine. In 1884, he was promoted to associate editor of the Christian Union. In 1890, a small collection of Mabie's essays which reflected upon life, literature and nature were published as a volume entitled My Study Fire". He wrote several essay books include: Essays in Literary Interpretation, Essays on Nature and Culture, Essays on Books and Culture, Essays in Lent, and Essays on Work and Culture.
