Franklin Augustine Thomas was born in Brooklyn, New York City, New York, USA. He is an American businessman, lawyer, and philanthropist. He was president of the Ford Foundation from 1979 to 1996. He has been on the board of the TFF Study Group, a nonprofit institution assisting development in South Africa since 2005. He was president and CEO of Bedford Stuyvesant Restoration Corporation from 1967–1977. He was attorney for the Federal Housing and Home Finance Agency in 1963 and then as assistant U.S. attorney in New York from 1964 to 1965. He graduated from Columbia University in 1956. He earned a LL.B. degree from Columbia Law School in 1963.
