Golda Meir was born in Kiev, Ukraine. She was an Israeli politician who served as the fourth Prime Minister of Israel from 1969-1974. She also served as Minister of Labour from 1949-1956 and Minister of Foreign Affairs from 1956-1966. The world's fourth and Israel's first and only woman to hold such an office, she has been described as the "Iron Lady" of Israeli politics, though her tenure ended before that term was applied to British Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher. In 1974, she was awarded the honor of World Mother by American Mothers. In 1975, she was awarded the Israel Prize for her special contribution to society and the State of Israel.
