James Abram Garfield was born in Orange Township(now Moreland Hills), Ohio, USA. He was an American republican politician, lawyer and teacher. He was the 20th President of the United States, serving from March 4, 1881, until his assassination later that year. He served as U.S. House of Representatives from Ohio's 19th district(1863-1880). He studied at Hiram College and Williams College. He married Lucretia Rudolph in 1858. He served as a member of the Ohio State Senate from 1859–1861. He opposed Confederate secession, served as a major general in the Union Army during the American Civil War, and fought in the battles of Middle Creek, Shiloh, and Chickamauga.
